Damn. The boy had been accepted into their little cult. Digby just hoped he hadn’t been one of them long enough to start believing in whatever fairy tales Autem had been telling him. The group of children all saluted by placing a closed fist across their chest. The image made Digby wince. Even Rebecca looked uncomfortable.

That was when things got worse.

Another six youths stood and made their way to the stage. Digby’s eyes bulged when he saw Hawk bringing up the rear. They merged into the first group of children and paired off, spreading out across the stage. Digby couldn’t help but notice that each pairing contained a boy and girl of similar ages. Alvin stood next to a girl in her teens and Hawk was placed beside a girl that looked a little younger.

The Bishop took things from there.

“Tonight, I welcome you six to an ancient calling. For nearly a millennium, the guardians have stood before the chaos of the world to protect and guide humanity to true prosperity. Through the light of the Nine, you will be bound to their guidance in following the will of the One. Do you submit to his will?”

The group of children all answered in the affirmative, each nodding their heads in unison. It pained Digby to see Hawk following along. At the very least he wanted the boy to rebel, despite knowing full well that he didn’t have a choice in the matter.

The Bishop proceeded to reach into the box on the altar to retrieve a small velvet pouch. Dumping it into his palm, a child-sized guardian ring tumbled out. He walked across the stage and handed it to the first of the young guardians. After that he proceeded to do the same for the others, handing the last ring in the box to the girl standing beside Hawk.

The Bishop returned to the center of the stage. “With this ring, I bind your will to his and bestow upon you the blessing of the Nine.”

With that, each of the young guardians turned to their partners and slipped the ring on to their finger. Digby’s jaw tightened. The ceremony reminded him of some sort of twisted wedding. If he hadn’t been a corpse, he was sure that his blood would have boiled in his veins.

The child pairings separated and formed one line as the Bishop continued to spew nonsense for another twenty minutes. After that, the ceremony ended and the congregation of guardians exited the cathedral the way they had come in. Digby and Rebecca filtered into the crowd and made their escape, not wanting to run into that seer again.

Back above ground, they made for the gate that led to Skyline’s side of the base. Without Campbell’s dinner cart, there was no way to get back into the secure building that they had been sneaking around in, no matter how much they needed to. They would have to retreat and try again the next day. With the aid of a Waking Dream
